PLACE VIGER
MASTER PLAN

Place Viger, in the east end of Old Montreal, lies at the nexus of three historically significant neighbourhoods: the old walled city of Ville Marie, the 19th century working class district of Faubourg Quebec, and the university/hospital precinct. The site is home to historic Dalhousie Square and Chateau Viger, one of Canadian National Railway’s earliest chateau-style hotels.

planningAlliance developed a program and development concept, including urban design principles. With stakeholder input gathered at three design charettes, we then prepared a massing scheme that comprised retail, hotel, institutional and office programming, as well as major new residential development. The development scenario is highlighted by a large ramp, which ascends from St. Antoine Street up to the Rue Notre-Dame, creating a new public amphitheatre in the interior of the block, and connecting the historical city with Faubourg Quebec.
