Since 1829, Upper Canada College has educated Canada’s future leaders. The College is now also leading by example through the development of a 20-year Green School Master Plan that will transform UCC into a sustainable institution and serve as a model for other schools across Canada.
Together with Zeidler Partnership, planningAlliance was commissioned to analyze UCC’s main campus in downtown Toronto and its environmental education campus north of the city and established a planning framework to both reduce the environmental impact of the school’s operation and guide the development of almost 24,620 m2 of new athletic and academic buildings over the next 20 years.
The resulting plan included relatively radical but practical goals regarding future energy and water consumption, air quality, building materials, school supplies (including food), transportation (including enhancement of the pedestrian realm), greening and heritage enhancement. The Plan was enthusiastically adopted by the College, has already resulted in a substantial reduction in annual operating costs, and is guiding a number of capital investments on-campus.
