The population of Jordan’s capital city is forecasted to triple over the next 20 years. pA was appointed in the fall of 2006 by the municipality to lead a planning team charged with helping it grapple with this growth and various pressing urban development issues, including preparation of Community Plans, an Interim Growth Strategy, and various Corridor Intensification Plans. Community Plans clarify land uses defined at a district scale and prepare the way for the creation of zoning bylaws.
The Interim Growth Strategy responds to intense pressure for high density, mixed use development by identifying three growth centers within the city and diverting pressure away from Amman’s historic and stable neighbourhoods. The strategy guides high density development with new urban design and development guidelines, zoning, transportation standards and a revised development approvals process. The municipality is currently reviewing over 50 high-density development applications using the strategy.
The Corridor Intensification Plan responds to intense development pressure along Amman’s primary corridors and key intersections. The plan consists of a series of urban design, transportation and interim development controls to guide development along 40 kilometers of urban corridors. Transportation improvements consist of enhanced public transit and improved road designs, pedestrian enhancement and parking controls and policy. Interim development and urban design controls include land use and zoning designations, contextual building height limitations and building envelope standards within a Corridor Development Manual.
The Amman Master Plan was awarded the World Leadership Award in Town Planning in December 2007 by the World Leadership Forum.
