FORT ERIE GATEWAY
MASTER PLAN

Fort Erie is the busiest border crossing on the Niagara Frontier. It has been a gateway and meeting place for over 4,000 years; in fact, the largest First Nations archaeological site in eastern North America lies directly under the Canada Customs Plaza.

The Fort Erie Gateway Master Plan articulated an overall vision of Fort Erie as a destination in its own right and a gateway into the Niagara Region, not simply a point of transit. The essence of the Master Plan was to reinvigorate Fort Erie’s historic role as an important meeting place of cultures and peoples. To do so,

planningAlliance designed landscaping and urban design measures to enhance the overall appearance of the Canada Customs Plaza, improve vehicle flow and facilitate pedestrian and bicycle access. We also closed roads and reconfigured the visitor centre to re-connect historic Fort Erie with the waterfront, and “daylighted” important archaeological resources with in situ excavation and interpretative elements.
