GARDINER EXPRESSWAY TRANSFORMATION

planningAlliance, in collaboration with Brook McIlroy Inc., was commissioned by the Toronto Waterfront Redevelopment Corporation to prepare a strategy for transforming Toronto’s elevated Gardiner Expressway into a positive urban feature, while retaining its important transportation function. Key to the plan is the relocation of Lake Shore Boulevard from beneath the Expressway and the infilling of the elevated structure with a series of active buildings and public spaces.

The Study also calls for an enhanced transit role for the Expressway, with the dedication of two lanes as exclusive transit corridors. The Study includes extensive analyses of a variety of precedents as well as a series of detailed urban design, architectural and financing strategies for reintegrating the Gardiner / Lakeshore Corridor within the city’s fabric.
