The City of Guelph is growing rapidly and is home to one of 25 Urban Growth Centres designated by the Provincial Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe.
planningAlliance, working with Meridian Planning Consultants, was retained to examine how this continued growth should be managed over the next 25 years. Working closely with the municipality, planningAlliance selected four areas of the City that were representative of the types of places where growth was likely to occur: part of downtown (the Urban Growth Centre), two major transporation nodes within the built-up boundary of the city, and one area on the urbanizing fringe.
planningAlliance then developed a series of intensification scenarios – both in two and three dimensions – for each area to illustrate how urban development might occur over the long-term, from minor through to major intensification. These scenarios were the subject of considerable discussion at a number of public forums, as stakeholders debated how Guelph could and should develop in the future.
