PLACES TO GROW

Places to Grow is the Province of Ontario’s award-winning plan for 21st century development across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. As a core member of the planning team for the initiative, planningAlliance helped refine planning policies and density targets, and tested their application to various jurisdictions throughout the region.

planningAlliance also developed an image library for the plan, which illustrates what successful, sustainable, intensive growth will look like, as the policies of the plan are applied across the region. Rooted in a thorough understanding of the principles of Smart Growth, an intimate understanding of how communities in southern Ontario have changed over time, and a knowledge of how to achieve the new density targets required by the Province, these images serve as important public engagement tools and communicate one of the key goals of the plan: to create attractive built environments that support a mix of uses, are transit-supportive, and are pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly.

The Places to Grow Plan won the Daniel Burnham Award from the American Planning Association and Awards of Excellence from both the Canadian Institute of Planners and the Ontario Professional Planning Institute.
