Streets + Public Spaces

Our combined team of over 60 planners, urban designers, landscape architects, planners, architects, engineers, and community engagement specialists support a broad scope of practice, ranging from the design of custom street furniture to comprehensive corridor plans. The design of streets and public spaces forms a key element of our practice and is informed by a profound respect of the public realm.  The space between buildings is the forum for our public life, and deserves particular attention. Through a combination of experience and commitment to innovation, our team strives to give public spaces the the attention they deserve.  Our services include:

  • Streetscape Design
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Walkability and Cycling Studies
  • Transit-Oriented Development
  • Custom Street Furniture Design
  • Site Planning
  • Traffic Calming

Our team pioneered many of the concepts that have evolved into the concept of “complete streets” on projects such as the St. George Street revitalization, completed in 1997.  The new road section maintained traffic volumes, while reducing collisions by 40% and increased cycling traffic by 23% (Transport Canada)

Ecological and environmental sustainability underscore all the work we produce.  We have pioneered the introduction of soil-cell technology in the GTA as part of our Bloor Street Transformation, and continue to work with progressive municipalities on the introduction of bicycle sharing facilities such as the BIXI program in Toronto.
